Part 1: Etiology and Epidemiology.

Course Requirements: KNOW Curriculum Pages 21-30.

Objectives:
  • Define HIV and AIDS
  • Discuss how HIV is transmitted.
  • Explain how HIV works in the body.
  • List risk behaviors for HIV transmission.
  • Explain factors affecting transmission of HIV.

Part 2: Transmission and Universal Precautions

Course Requirements: HIV/AIDS Manual, pages 21 to 40.

CDC AIDS Guidelines

Objectives:
Part 2 Course Objectives Infection Control:
  • Describe the CDC hand hygiene guidelines for healthcare.
  • Explain recommended infection control practices in the healthcare setting.
  • Explain post-exposure interventions in the occupational setting.
  • Discuss Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).

Part 3 Testing and Counseling

Course Requirements: HIV/AIDS Manual, pages 41 to 54.
CDC Recommendations.

Part 3 Course Objectives Testing and Counseling:
  • Discuss indications for HIV testing.
  • List and describe the two steps to HIV antibody testing.
  • Explain positive and negative HIV testing.
  • Discuss general CDC guidelines for screening and counseling patients in all healthcare settings.

Part 4: Clinical manifestations and treatment

Part 4 Course Objectives: HIV and AIDS Diagnosis
  • Identify the stages of HIV infection.
  • List diagnostic tests to identify primary HIV infection.
  • Define "seroconversion" and the accompanying manifestations.
  • Describe symptoms of opportunistic infections related to immune suppression.

Part 5 Legal and ethical issues

Part 5 Course Objectives Legal Considerations:

  • Define "reportable conditions".
  • Discuss confidentiality requirements to protect HIV records.
  • Describe what is meant by "discrimination-free" workplace.
  • Summarize general Federal and Washington state legal reporting requirements related to HIV/AIDS diagnosis.

Part 6 Psychosocial issues

3. An Overview of the Psychosocial Issues That Impact Family's Affected by HIV/AIDS by Lauriann Tomaszeski

Part 6 Course Objectives Psychological Issues:
  • Explain how AIDS-related bereavement is different from other models.
  • Discuss the complex family and psychosocial issues related to HIV/AIDS diagnosis.
  • Summarize psychological responses to multiple losses.
  • List self-care practices for caregivers.
  • Begin to formulate a plan for providing social and psychological support for AIDS patients and caregivers.
